Eagles-Rams

Eagles 17, Rams 16

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Mike McMahon made a lot of bad plays. He also made the winning play.

The Philadelphia Eagles' backup threw three interceptions but also tossed the game-winning touchdown pass to long snapper Mike Bartrum on the first play of the fourth quarter in a lackluster 17-16 victory over the St. Louis Rams on Sunday.

On a rare day when neither quarterback threw for 100 yards, McMahon did the bare minimum to win.

``I had some highs and lows,'' McMahon said. ``You're going to have that in some games. Luckily, our defense stepped up and made some big plays and gave us some short fields.''

The game matched two of the NFC's biggest disappointments, and lived up to that billing with mistakes aplenty. Together, the teams were penalized 28 times for 230 yards, divided pretty much equally.

``It wasn't the prettiest thing, obviously,'' Eagles coach Andy Reid said. ``We do need to get better.''

The Eagles (6-8) won for the second time in eight games and sent the Rams (5-9) to their fifth loss in six games.

``When you keep shooting yourself in the foot, which is the same old story, the same old broken record, you don't have a chance,'' interim coach Joe Vitt said. ``It's a shame, it really is.''

The most electrifying play came early, a 59-yard touchdown sprint by Ryan Moats, who squirted through a pileup at the line and broke three tackles for the Eagles' first score. Bartrum made the decisive play when he caught a 3-yard touchdown pass after McMahon rolled out. He has two catches all season, both for 3-yard scores.

McMahon said Bartrum was the ``third or fourth'' option on the play. He also said he's never thrown a ball to him in practice.

``If there wasn't anything else there I was going to throw it out of the back of the end zone,'' McMahon said. ``As I kept moving he just kind of stopped right in the hole.''

Brian Dawkins' interception and 24-yard return to the 28 set up the winning score.

McMahon, starting for injured Donovan McNabb, was 15-for-28 for 97 yards. Rams defensive back DeJuan Groce thought he looked disoriented all day.

``He was very confused out there, and it helped us out in the secondary,'' Groce said. ``He didn't really know what was going on.''

Still, McMahon did enough to trump Rams rookie Ryan Fitzpatrick, who was 10-for-24 for 69 yards with one touchdown and an interception.

Fitzpatrick, who threw three touchdown passes in his NFL debut after subbing for an injured Jamie Martin Nov. 27 at Houston, threw for his first score in three starts. But he was so ineffective the 35-year-old Martin replaced him with 6:40 remaining.

Starting quarterback Marc Bulger, who missed his fourth straight game with a shoulder injury, delivered the news to Fitzpatrick.

``Today was a tough game,'' Fitzpatrick said. ``That's just the move they had to make. They felt like they needed a spark, and it's fine.''

Steven Jackson reached 1,000 yards for the first time for the Rams and Marshall Faulk had his best game of the year in a reserve role, running for 87 yards on 16 carries to move past Marcus Allen for ninth place on the all-time rushing list. He now has 12,249 yards, topping Allen's mark of 12,243.

But Faulk, who got more playing time because of Jackson's minor hip pointer, was thrown for a 2-yard loss on his biggest carry, a fourth-and-1 at the Eagles 36 with 3:14 to go.

The Rams capitalized on a lost fumble by Lamar Gordon to take a 16-7 lead on Jeff Wilkins' third field goal of the game, a 28-yarder. The Eagles made it a one-score game again with David Akers' 31-yard field goal.

Jackson had 62 yards on seven carries on the Rams' opening drive, setting up a 26-yard field goal by Wilkins. Moats got almost as many yards on one attempt, squirting free at the line and breaking three tackles for his big run to put the Eagles ahead.

Pisa Tinoisamoa's interception of an underthrown pass by McMahon and 20-yard return to the 5 led to the Rams' go-ahead score. On the next play, Fitzpatrick hit Torry Holt on a 5-yard score for his first touchdown pass in three weeks.

Wilkins added a 53-yard field goal, his longest of the season, to put the Rams ahead 13-7 at the half.

Notes: Holt has 53 touchdowns with the Rams, tied with Elroy Hirsch for second on the franchise list. ... Wilkins has 101 points, his fifth 100-point season. ... The Rams were whistled for eight false starts, three on rookie guard Claude Terrell. ... Faulk's previous season best was 50 yards on six carries against the Titans in Week 3. He had 87 yards on 16 attempts after entering the game with 175 yards on 35 carries for the year.

Giants 26, Eagles 23, OT

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jay Feely kept his head down and maintained his focus while replays of his recent missed field goals were shown on the video screen during a timeout.

He'll watch this kick again - and again.

Feely's 36-yarder with 3:55 left in overtime lifted the New York Giants to a 26-23 victory Sunday that put them closer to the NFC East title and knocked the Philadelphia Eagles out of the playoff chase.

Feely cost the Giants a victory in Seattle two weeks ago by missing three late kicks, but made all four of his attempts against the Eagles, who played in the last four NFC championship games.

``It was tough,'' Feely said. ``When the game is on the line and you don't come through, you feel you let your team down.''

Feely never looked up to see his failures against the Seahawks on the giant video screen behind the end zone.

``The music was eerie so I figured they were playing something like that,'' Feely said. ``I tried to visualize what I needed to do.''

Tiki Barber had 124 yards rushing and one TD catch and the Giants overcame Eli Manning's three interceptions in the fourth quarter and overtime.

Osi Umenyiora sacked Mike McMahon and Kenderick Allen recovered McMahon's fumble at the Eagles 27, setting up Feely's winning kick four plays later.

``I had all the confidence in Jay,'' Manning said. ``I knew he was going to hit a big one for us.''

Rookie Ryan Moats, filling in for the injured Brian Westbrook, had 114 yards rushing and two touchdowns for the Eagles (5-8).

New York (9-4) is one game ahead of Dallas in the NFC East.

``We're still trying to finish up strong and let teams like the Giants and teams in our division know, we've got to let them know where we're coming from and give them a good view of next year,'' Eagles defensive end Jevon Kearse said.

David Akers' 50-yard field goal with 1:52 left in the fourth quarter tied it at 23 after Sheldon Brown intercepted Manning's pass. Manning threw another pick in the final minute, but the Eagles couldn't take advantage. His third pick came in overtime, but he had 312 yards passing.

``The first (interception) was a bad decision. The second one was a bad throw,'' Manning said.

Decimated by injuries and discord, Philadelphia became the fifth consecutive team to miss the playoffs after losing the Super Bowl the previous season. Six of the 10 players that went to the Pro Bowl last year were lost to injuries, free agency or suspension, including Donovan McNabb, Westbrook and the banished Terrell Owens.

Coming off a 42-0 home loss to Seattle on Monday night, the Eagles played their best all-around game in weeks. But they fell to 0-5 against the East.

``From the coaches to the players, everyone was embarrassed about Monday night. They weren't going to let that happen again,'' coach Andy Reid said.

New York went ahead 20-17 on Feely's 21-yard field goal in the third quarter. The Giants had a first down at the Eagles 2, but couldn't get in.

Feely's 27-yarder made it 23-17, and the Eagles closed to 23-20 on Akers' 36-yarder. Akers hit the crossbar on a 49-yard attempt in the third quarter.

McMahon, starting his fourth game for McNabb, had 190 yards passing and the one turnover, one week after he threw two interceptions that were returned for scores.

After the Giants went up 17-7 on Feely's 24-yard field goal in the second quarter, the Eagles quickly answered with an 80-yard drive that took six plays. Moats went around the left side for an 18-yard TD run.

Akers kicked a 42-yard field goal to tie it at 17 at halftime.

Manning's 1-yard sneak early in the second quarter gave the Giants a 14-7 lead. A 26-yard run by Barber got New York to the Eagles 1. Manning scored on fourth down.

The Giants methodically went down the field on the opening possession and Manning's 4-yard pass to Barber put New York ahead 7-0. But the Eagles needed just four plays to tie it. Moats turned the corner and sprinted down the left side for a 40-yard TD run.

A third-round pick this year, Moats was inactive for nine of the first 10 games and came in with 50 yards rushing.

``It felt great, but obviously the win is more important than anything else,'' Moats said.

Owens was deactivated as planned for the second straight game. He served a four-game suspension for conduct detrimental to the team and was told not to return.

Notes: The Eagles won the NFC East the previous four years. ... The Giants swept the season series for the first time since 2000. One team has swept in 19 of the last 21 years. ... With one more loss, the Eagles will clinch their first losing season since 1999. ... Giants RT Kareem McKenzie (hamstring), LT Luke Petitgout (ankle), DT William Joseph (leg) and MLB Antonio Pierce (back) left with injuries in the first half.

Seahawks 42, Eagles 0

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Mike Holmgren confronted his defense last week. They definitely got the message, making a cross-country trip to Philadelphia for a Monday night game in the snow nothing more than a romp through the Linc.

Using big plays on defense, including interception returns for touchdowns by Andre Dyson and rookie Lofa Tatupu, and smaller ones from their top-ranked offense, the Seattle Seahawks routed the Eagles 42-0.

``I challenged them during the week, our young guys, and they really stepped up,'' Seattle's coach said. ``Tonight, they really had fun. They got to turn those things into touchdowns.

``We gave up a lot of yards to the Giants and San Francisco, and I feel we're better than that. We weren't giving up a lot of points, but I thought we hit a bit of a leveling and I kind of pounded them a bit. If they played tonight like that because they are mad at me, that's fine.''

Of course, these aren't the same Eagles who made the last four NFC championship games. Philadelphia (5-7) has been torn apart by injuries and the Terrell Owens affair and played its worst game since becoming an NFC force in 2001.

Certainly a better fight was expected. Yet the Seahawks (10-2) dominated from the outset, winning their eighth straight game, tying a team record set in 1984. They gained only 194 yards overall - the Seahawks were averaging 386 - but didn't need to do much after taking a 35-0 halftime lead.

``I've never been ahead like that against a good football team,'' Holmgren said. ``It was kind of new territory.''

Seattle, which got two short touchdowns runs from NFL rushing leader Shaun Alexander, sort of sneaked its way to the top of the conference and barely survived the New York Giants last week. In the Monday night spotlight, though, the NFC West champions filled the scoreboard.

``We just jumped on them and didn't let them breathe,'' said Dyson, who was on crutches and wore a protective boot on his left ankle after spraining it returning Ryan Moats' fumble 25 yards for a touchdown on the first play of the second half.

Dyson was carried off the field by several teammates, but Holmgren said he didn't think it was serious.

``I think we showed a lot of people about this team,'' Alexander added.

It was Philadelphia's worst loss since a 38-0 flop against Seattle to open the 1998 season. Indeed, as Dyson scored on his fumble return, the Linc pretty much emptied out. The majority of fans stayed that long only because the Eagles retired Reggie White's No. 92 at halftime.

The Eagles, who had six turnovers, were shut out for the first time since 2003 when Tampa Bay beat them 17-0 in the first game in the new stadium. It was the Eagles' worst home loss since they were beaten 49-0 by Green Bay in 1962.

``Embarrassing may be a good term for it,'' DE Jevon Kearse said. ``It was embarrassing and everything else bad that goes with it.''

And, they lost running back Brian Westbrook with a sprained foot. He will have an MRI on Tuesday.

It didn't take long for Seattle's powerful offense to begin the scoring. Well, it actually took more than eight minutes on the opening drive, a relentless march featuring four third-down conversions and 16 plays. Matt Hasselbeck, flushed to the right, found Bobby Engram wide open in the end zone for an 11-yard pass after Philadelphia's Jeremiah Trotter and Quintin Mikell collided.

Three plays earlier, Trotter's illegal contact penalty negated Mikell's interception in the end zone.

When the Eagles staged their own productive drive, it ended ignominiously as Mike McMahon stared straight at receiver Greg Lewis. Dyson read the pass perfectly, picked it off and raced 72 yards down the left sideline for a 14-0 lead.

Early in the second quarter, McMahon threw directly to middle linebacker Tatupu, who went 38 yards to make it 21-0. It was the first time in 30 years the Eagles have allowed two interception runbacks for scores in a game, according to Elias Sports Bureau.

``Maybe it was a little reaction, but it wasn't the greatest decision on the QB's part,'' Tatupu said. ``But he has a strong arm and he thought he could force it in there and I just undercut it at the right time.

``It was a great game all around. It just proved we are coming together at a time when we need to come together.''

Alexander got his first TD of the night on a 2-yard run one play after Koy Detmer, in for the inept McMahon, had his pass tipped by the omnipresent Tatupu and picked off by Michael Boulware. He added his league-leading 22nd touchdown of the season with a 1-yarder set up by Hasselbeck's 42-yard pass to D.J. Hackett.

Alexander finished with 49 yards rushing, the first time in more than a year he had fewer than 60 yards. But he didn't play in the second half.

``I was begging to stay in there,'' he said jokingly.

Owens finished his team suspension for conduct detrimental to the franchise. He was deactivated before the game, as he will be for the rest of a season spiraling out of control.

Notes: Seattle holds the NFL record for interception returns for TDs with four against Kansas City on Nov. 4, 1984. ... The Eagles last allowed two interception returns for TDs on Nov. 3, 1975, against the Los Angeles Rams. ... McMahon and Detmer each threw two interceptions, Moats and Detmer lost fumbles.
